Big Cypress under the light of the Full Moon
January 10 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am
We will be hosting a 2-day, 2-night backpacking trip in one of Florida’s largest National Preserves, Big Cypress. For this trip, we will meet 10:00 am on Friday at the Big Cypress Welcome Center on US 41 in Ochopee FL. We will then begin our hike into the preserve. This will be a moderate paced backpacking trip that will cover a distance of about 14 miles total. Friday – 7 miles to camp, Saturday return to the Welcome Center parking lot. Camping at the Welcome Center Saturday night is available and optional. Once we arrive at our camps, we will set up camp, build a camp fire and enjoy each other’s company. After the sun sets, we will have the opportunity to look and listen at the marvelous sights and sounds of dusk in the preserve under the light of the full moon! Birds returning home to roost, crickets and frogs croaking and chirping, mystery animals calling in the distance.
Throughout this trip we will be hiking on back country trails which may be uneven, narrow and possible wet in spots as well as staying in primitive campsites. The trails will pass through open stretches sun protection is recommended. There is non-potable water near the camp so all drinking water will need to be treated. It is advised to start off the trip by carry a large amount of water in case there is limited water on the trail or at camp.
Each hiker is responsible for all of their own gear they would need throughout the trip. Check out our suggested gear list. Shared equipment is allowed if it is agreed upon beforehand. Additional details will be emailed as the backpacking trip gets closer.
Pre-registration is required for this trip.
